THE MALTA EQUIDROME

Equestrian sports in Malta has existed since ancient times with the Malta Racing Club and the Malta Polo Club both being established way back in 1868. From flat racing, polo and eventually harness racing the area known by everyone as the Marsa Racetrack over the span of 155 years has seen great changes trying to keep up with the evolving times.

But nothing compares to the great development which was approved in July 2019 by a Parliamentary resolution to hand over a 65-year concession to Marsa Race Track Limited in order to develop the area into a state of the art equestrian facility – from then on this is our story – the birth of the Malta Equidrome.

In October 2015 a request for proposal (RFP) was issued by the Government for the regenaration project of the Marsa Race Track – a dream that every horse owner and spectator had been waiting for. One submission was eventually received that of Marsa Race Track Limited.

Naturally a project of this magnitude requires a long process especially as it was being considered a prototype not only locally but also internationally. Finally on July 2019 a Parliamentary resolution was unanimously approved for the project to go ahead and during a press conference on 23rd July, Hon Clifton Grima who was then the Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Youths, Sport and Voluntary Organisations announced a €28 million investment for the regeneration of the Marsa Race Track.

The project was not just the racetrack itself and the existing Polo pitch but was to include facilities for different equestrian sports. It was to become a place where everyone could practice different equestrian sports whether it was harness racing, flat racing, pony racing, polo, show jumping, dressage, horse shows and events. Modern stabling facilities were to be built with training and rehab facilities that would ensure the welfare and well being of the horses.

Apart from all this the complex is to comprise a modern Grandstand, working offices, food and beverage outlets, a shopping mall and business centre. To compliment all this a multi storey carpark is also to provide adequate parking facilities.

THE EQUESTRIMALTA CAWNPORE CUP

One of the highlights of our equine sport calendar is the highly anticipated EquestriMalta Cawnpore Cup. This prestigous event by Malta Polo Club, brings together Malta’s top players to compete in a thrilling polo tournament. Renowned for its electrifying atmosphere, the EquestriMalta Cawnpore Cup has become a staple in Malta’s sporting calendar, attracting both local and international spectators who eagerly anticipate witnessing the skill and excitement that each chukka will showcase.

EQUESTRIMALTA

EquestriMalta is Malta’s regulatory authority that oversees and supports all equine sport. The ACT has been approved in Parliament in October 2020 and since then it has been growing and leaving its mark on several equine sport disciplines, mainly Horse Racing, Polo, Dressage, Show Jumping amongst other emerging disciplines. The authority’s remit is to support the development and implementation of the principles as described in the ACT of EquestriMalta and to promote consistent principles aimed to defend the integrity and prestigue of equine sport in general and to exercise regulatory functions in delivering related services. These functions are focused mainly on the promotion of equine sports, improvement of training and competitive facilities, education and training, international opportunities for our athletes, the wellbeing of the horses, raising the bar in the quality and infrastructure of the sport, anti-doping, international visibility, better conditions for all the equine sport enthusiasts and much more.
